Did SS General Hans Kammler die in 1945, or enter American custody?

Intelligence Community sources allege that he became a key link between Nazi efforts to exploit recovered technology and a postwar American UFO legacy program. The claim is extraordinary.

The documented reasons the United States might have wanted him are not.

What the sources allege:

• Italy recovered acraft near Magenta in 1933, gave Germany access in 1934 and identified its occupants as advanced terrestrial“Nordics”

• Himmler’s 1935 Ahnenerbe became the program used to find the“Nordics”and exploit their technology

• The United States learned of the work in 1944-45. The sources say it later absorbed an overt von Braun stream and a covert Kammler stream through the** Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency**, Overcast and Paperclip

• They trace the work through the CIG, CIA and Air Force, then to a claimed 1962 transfer into the Air Force and defense industry

• The Magenta account recasts theDie Glockelegend. Any Bell-like device, they say, may have been an attempt to copy recovered technology

• The central historical question is whether Kammler survived and entered American custody.

The Paper That Changes The Question

On a typewritten page dated 7 May 1945, Hans Kammler appears not as a fugitive or a dead man, but as a prisoner being sent for interrogation.

The page was reproduced in the 2019 book The Hidden Nazi. It identifies the SS-Obergruppenführer as responsible for Germany’s V-weapons and secret projects.

It says he surrendered on 6 May and was being sent to Kohnstein for “detailed interrogation and evaluation” of underground weapons research.

The copy is difficult to authenticate. It has no traceable file number or identified archival original. Its letterhead and signature are redacted. But other American and British records also cast doubt on Kammler’s accepted death.

Even without Magenta or Die Glocke, Kammler had plenty to offer. By 1945, he sat above secret weapons, underground factories, engineers and records. If the Americans got him, they got a map to part of the hidden Reich.

Germany was not ahead in every field. But it had pushed further than the Allies in several areas of military technology, including ballistic missiles, operational jet aircraft, guided weapons and high-speed aerodynamics.

For the United States, capturing that knowledge could accelerate its own weapons programs. It could also deny the same scientists, documents and hardware to the Soviet Union.

The Engineer Of Weapons - And Mass Murder

To understand Kammler’s value, it is first necessary to understand what he controlled - and the crimes on which that power was built.

A 29 January 1943 letter addressed to Kammler reported progress on Crematorium II at Birkenau and referred to its basement “gassing cellar”.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum records that he authorized three undressing barracks beside provisional gas chambers during the 1944 murder of Hungarian Jews.

Children were among the victims. The Auschwitz Museum estimates that about 232,000 children and young people were deported to the camp. Most were killed.

Forced labour also powered Kammler’s weapons system.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum calls him the “decisive personality ” in the history of Mittelbau.

In a word, Kammler was evil. There is no glamour to Kammler and his deeds.

Prisoners dug tunnels and assembled V-2 rockets in appalling conditions.

More than 20,000 people died across the camp system.

By the final months of the war, Kammler’s special staff controlled or coordinated underground A-4 production, V-weapons and priority aircraft programs.

He sat above specialists such as Wernher von Braun, whose team developed the V-2 for the Nazis and later the Saturn V for the Americans.

Kammler had become a systems manager of Nazi secrecy. He knew who was doing what, where work and records were hidden, and how the compartments fitted together.

One researcher who wishes to remain anonymous and has extensive knowledge of the Kammler mystery and German technology research during World War 2 told Liberation Times:

“[Kammler] would have been exceptionally valuable because he was probably the only person who held most, if not all, of the knowledge of all the secret compartments of all the V-weapons in his head.”

A September 1946 British assessment was more cautious. It said Kammler’s technical knowledge might be second-hand, but that he knew where documents, stocks and pilot plants could be found.

That was already bargaining power. Any exotic technology, if it existed within his network, would only have added to it.

The Race For German Technology

The scale of that value becomes clearer in the final weeks of the war. German science had become an American military objective.

On 25 April 1945, General Carl Spaatz said Operation LUSTY - the U.S. Army Air Forces hunt for German aeronautical technology - had “equal priority with operations”.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force says teams collected aircraft, weapons and documents, inspected research sites and recruited scientists.

That technology hunt unfolded alongside the final military campaign. General George Patton wanted to continue toward Berlin. But Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, chose not to make the capital the principal Western objective.

In mid-April, Patton’s Third Army was directed southeast through southern Germany toward Austria.

Allied fears of a Nazi “National Redoubt” in the Alps were part of the calculation.

The route still carried U.S. forces through some of the Reich’s most sensitive infrastructure.

The Third Army entered the Ohrdruf area near the secret S-3 complex at Jonastal and captured the underground cache at Merkers.

Elsewhere, American forces reached Nordhausen and the Kohnstein tunnels, where V-2 production had moved from Peenemünde. They seized parts for around 100 V-2s before the area passed to Soviet control.

German researchers had scattered too.

Wernher von Braun was sent south to Bavaria and surrendered to U.S. forces. Specialist teams raced across Germany and Austria for hardware, files, laboratories and scientists before the Soviets could reach them.

The Americans were racing for the Reich’s technology. Kammler could have offered something even more useful: the route map.

That is the setting for one of the most intriguing claims about his final days.

The Hidden Nazi records Kammler’s wife telling their son Jörg that “the Americans reached out to Kammler, not the reverse.”

If the family account is accurate, contact may have begun before the war ended.

The Story Before Roswell

The sources speaking to Liberation Times place a far more extraordinary story inside that documented hunt.

Their chronology begins fourteen years before Roswell - the July 1947 incident in New Mexico that became central to the history of alleged U.S. UFO recovery.

They allege that an unusual craft was recovered near Magenta in 1933, during Benito Mussolini’s rule.

They say human-looking bodies found with it belonged to an advanced, Earth-based population they call “Nordics”, rather than extraterrestrial visitors.

Germany, they say, gained access in 1934 and began exploiting the technology with Italy. Open-source evidence of close German-Italian research that early is scarce. Technical cooperation grew later.

By 1943, Germany occupied northern Italy and controlled key military and industrial sites. One was SIAI-Marchetti at Vergiate, near Milan. Italian UFO researcher Roberto Pinotti identifies it as the likely storage site for the alleged wreckage.

Former U.S. intelligence official David Grusch brought part of the Magenta story into public view in June 2023.

In a recorded interview, he said a craft recovered near Magenta in 1933 was later secured by the United States. He also alleged that the Vatican helped American officials locate it.

Grusch did not mention bodies.

That claim comes from the Intelligence Community sources speaking to Liberation Times.

Italian citizen Marco Negri described a separate family story: his great-great-grandfather, Pietro Negri - Podesta (Mayor) of Arona - spoke of a wingless metallic aircraft crashing in Magenta in the 1930s, with two blond-haired “bodies” inside.

In the sources’ chronology, Magenta is the recovery point. The next link is institutional. They say Germany formalised the search through Heinrich Himmler’s creation of the SS Ahnenerbe in 1935.

The Alleged German Program

The SS Ahnenerbe existed. We know that, at the very least.

Founded by Heinrich Himmler in 1935, it used archaeology, anthropology and expeditions to support Nazi racial ideas.

The sources say it also concealed another mission: finding the terrestrial “Nordic” population and obtaining its technology.

The sources call the alleged technology “Vril” , a term from Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s 1871 novel The Coming Race. The novel revolves around an advanced subterranean race with telepathic powers, known as Vril-ya.

Later occult writers treated Vril as real.

The sources say Kammler’s absorbed team later spoke of “Vril craft”.

For that claim to connect with Kammler, the Ahnenerbe and his secret-weapons apparatus need to intersect.

And bizarrely, they do.

Ahnenerbe, Kammler And The S-3 Gap

Hans Schleif provides the clearest bridge. He was an architect and archaeologist who had led Ahnenerbe excavations before handing the post to Herbert Jankuhn in the summer of 1942.

On 14 April 1943, Ahnenerbe manager Wolfram Sievers asked Kammler to use Schleif in the SS construction apparatus.

Kammler agreed two days later.

Schleif entered the SS-WVHA in 1943 and, by mid-1944, was one of Kammler’s deputies. Julian Klein’s study cites the Bundesarchiv letters.

A second, less certain bridge comes from military historian Tino Struckmann. In his documentary ‘SS Ahnenerbe’, he says he found Kammler-to-Himmler memoranda about secret research locations for the organization.

In Struckmann’s words:

“The head of the special weapons program [Kammler] was working on locations for them [the SS Ahnenerbe].”

Struckmann also cites Werner Goldmann’s account of Ahnenerbe officers at the highly secret S-3 complex in the Jonastal.

Postwar accounts link the site to secret-weapons testing and nuclear research.

The overlap between what is seen as a fringe pseudoscience group and the Nazi’s complex secret weapons development is striking.

Later UFO accounts echo the archaeological theme associated with the Ahnenerbe.

Dylan Borland alleged that an advanced vehicle of unknown origin was unearthed during a dig. Bob Lazar said in 2019 that he recalled a UAP linked to an archaeological excavation.

The Ahnenerbe’s wartime interests also reached into marine research.

Historian Maria Zarifi found that the German-Greek Biological Institute in occupied Piraeus took part in marine-science programs conducted by staff working under Walther Wüst, the scientific head of the SS Ahnenerbe.

German researchers were also carrying out oceanographic work across the Aegean for military authorities.

Separately, German divers in occupied Greece were conducting underwater scientific work and recovering archaeological material.

The Bell Legend

The wider Nazi-UFO literature is notoriously difficult to disentangle from postwar invention, and many of its best-known claims lack contemporary documentation.

That is why Die Glocke matters here. Not because its existence has been established, but because it became the best-known story placing exotic propulsion inside Kammler’s secret-weapons world.

Not because Kammler needed it to make himself valuable, but because it is the best-known claim that places exotic propulsion inside his secret-weapons world.

In modern UFO and alternative-history circles, Kammler is tied to Die Glocke - “The Bell”.

Aviation journalist Nick Cook popularised the claim in his 2001 book The Hunt for Zero Point, after Igor Witkowski’s Prawda o Wunderwaffe.

Cook described a glowing, rotating machine said to consume enormous power and produce an antigravity effect.

Witkowski said a Polish official showed him secret papers. They have never surfaced, and no Allied capture record identifies the Bell.

Cook proposed that Kammler might have traded the device, or knowledge of it, for his freedom. That helped cement the modern link between Kammler, exotic propulsion and an American deal.

The Kammler connection later surfaced in Tom DeLonge’s Sekret Machines: Chasing Shadows.

Although a novel, DeLonge has described the project as informed by contacts within the U.S. defence and intelligence worlds.

The story explicitly depicts Kammler surviving the war and connects his secret-weapons apparatus to Die Glocke, underground research and the subsequent American exploitation of German technology.

Although not independent corroboration, the parallels with what Liberation Times sources are alleging is eyecatching.

The anonymous researcher who spoke with Liberation Times suggested that stories of Nazi-built flying saucers may have obscured the recovery of a craft Germany did not build:

“Maybe the Nazis did recover some form of alien crashed craft, and that was recovered by the Americans at the end of the war - and therefore all of those stories about the Nazis building flying saucers were a kind of smokescreen, a false trail to obscure what really happened.”

Whether the Bell existed does not decide the Kammler case.

His documented value stands without it. The more concrete question is whether the man himself survived.

Did Kammler Die?

The conventional account rests on conflicting testimony about a suicide near Prague. No body or personal effects were recovered.

A Berlin court nevertheless declared Kammler dead as of 9 May 1945 after his widow petitioned for the ruling. The decision established a legal death. It did not produce a body.

If Kammler instead entered American custody, that ruling would have made him easier to disappear from the record. That remains speculation. The harder problem is what appears in later files.

What The 7 May Paper Actually Says

The disputed page that opened this article is the most dramatic piece of that puzzle.

The Hidden Nazi says Holocaust historian Professor Gerald Fleming supplied the page after years of requests from co-author Colm Lowery.

Marked “By Diplomatic Pouch”, it says Kammler surrendered on 6 May and was to be taken to Kohnstein. A Counter Intelligence Corps officer, it adds, held documents from him that “may prove to be of considerable value”.

The page is not an original from a named archive. Much is blacked out. It has no traceable file number, and its letterhead and signature are redacted.

The report reads:

**_“Dr. Ing. KAMMLER is a trained architect by profession and was head of all secret projects including the V-1 and V-2. He further claims to have been head of [redacted] project based at the [redacted].

CIC Officer is in possession of documents from KAMMLER which may prove to be of considerable value. Dr. KAMMLER surrendered 6 May with other named persons attached.

Dressed in Heer uniform he later identified himself to an officer of [redacted]. By way of special order KAMMLER is to be transferred immediately to KOHNSTEIN, Germany for purposes of detailed interrogation and evaluation of underground weapons research and production facilities.

At the suggestion of the investigating officers Kammler is preparing a detailed report (in German). This is to include the following: Secret weapons development [redacted] Underground research and production facilities.”_**

The Dead Man In The American Files

The 7 May page is not the end of the trail. Later records are harder to square with a bureaucracy that had simply written Kammler off as dead.

A U.S. Strategic Air Forces memorandum dated 30 May 1945 listed German air personnel “presently being held for interrogation”. Kammler appears as number 18.

The Wilson Center investigation cites the document to the U.S. Air Force Historical Research Agency.

On 2 November 1945, Brigadier General George C. McDonald ordered personal interrogations of Albert Speer, Karl-Otto Saur and Kammler about underground installations. He called it the highest priority.

British files add another reference.

In September 1946, officers considered the danger that the Soviets might obtain Kammler’s knowledge of hidden documents, stocks and pilot plants.

No Paperclip file bearing Kammler’s name has been released, nor a completed American interrogation.

But his fate no longer turns on the disputed 7 May page alone. If U.S. agencies held him, the next question is whether they would have been prepared to hide it.

What America Was Prepared To Conceal

A secret arrangement with Kammler would have been politically toxic. His crimes alone gave Washington a reason to keep any relationship out of public view.

The anonymous researcher believes that is why he would have remained outside the formal Paperclip system:

“My understanding was that [Kammler] wasn't part of Paperclip. . . . There was another category that didn't even make Paperclip because their past was so unsavory, and Kammler fell into that bracket because he effectively was one of the architects of the Holocaust.”

There are documented cases in which utility overrode policy. A National Archives investigation found that Paperclip officials sought rewritten security reports when valuable candidates were barred by Truman’s rules.

Arthur Rudolph, a former Mittelwerk manager who later directed NASA’s Saturn V program, left the United States after a Justice Department investigation.

U.S. officers also protected Gestapo official Klaus Barbie and arranged his escape. Although such cases do not establish a Kammler deal, they do show that usefulness could outweigh a Nazi past.

The sources say the United States absorbed more than useful personnel.

They allege it also inherited Kammler’s compartmentalised secrecy: each participant saw only a task, while ordinary files never revealed the whole.

In their account, that structure allowed the work to move across agencies and contractors without appearing as one continuous program.

The Alleged Route Into The American System

Here, the sources’ chronology moves from Kammler’s fate to the alleged handover.

They trace hidden work through real postwar institutions, arguing that the program survived by changing homes.

They say U.S. officials learned of Magenta and Germany’s exploitation effort in 1944-45.

Liberation Times previously reported that three sources linked the recovery to the OSS and the McGregor Project, a mission tied to Italy’s surrender. A wartime message confirms McGregor moved to the OSS Research and Development Branch in June 1944.

After Germany fell, the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency became one of the main U.S. mechanisms for exploiting German expertise.

The National Archives says it operated under the Joint Chiefs and ran the foreign-scientist program, first called Overcast and later Paperclip.

Its documented work covered scientists, dossiers and technical intelligence.

The sources allege a second track inside that effort. Von Braun’s rocket team was handled openly.

Kammler’s SS Wunderwaffe personnel, records and technology, they say, were absorbed covertly.

The intelligence structure was also changing.

When the OSS broke up, its Research and Analysis Branch moved to the Department of State, where its lineage led to the Bureau of Intelligence and Research.

Clandestine elements continued as the War Department’s Strategic Services Unit, then moved into the Central Intelligence Group.

The sources say those successor bodies preserved an SS technology-exploitation effort, including covert activity in Latin America.

In January 1946, President Harry Truman established the National Intelligence Authority, the CIG and the position of Director of Central Intelligence.

The sources say this structure oversaw covert operations tied to the SS effort in Latin America.

A further transfer followed in 1947.

Secretary of War Robert Patterson approved moving the Manhattan Engineer District’s intelligence and counterintelligence unit to the CIG.

A top-secret State Department directive records the transfer of its Foreign Intelligence Branch, personnel and files. The sources say it fed the CIG’s Office of Special Operations.

The sources make a larger claim about the same year. They say SS craft exploitation helped drive both an autonomous intelligence agency able to act abroad - including support for military dictatorships in Latin America - and a separate aerospace-focused armed service.

For context of the Nazi presence in Argentina following the war, a U.S. State Department report declared:

“In Argentina the Germans have constructed a complete duplicate of the economic structure for war which they had in Germany… a base for the reconstitution of German aggressive power.”

The July 1947 National Security Act created the framework for the National Military Establishment, CIA and independent Air Force.

The structure took effect that September. The National Military Establishment became the Department of Defense in August 1949.

The sources say the hidden effort helped drive those changes.

For 1948-49, they point to the Office of Air Research at Wright Field, the Armed Services Procurement Act, the CIA Act of 1949 and the CIA’s Office of Scientific Intelligence.

They say these supplied research, contracting and secrecy authorities. Analyst, Kit Green, later joined the biological and medical side of CIA scientific intelligence.

The chronology then jumps to the Kennedy era.

The sources say a Wunderwaffe-derived stream stayed separate from the public space program until 1962.

They identify Harald Malmgren as a CIA non-official-cover officer and allege that he briefed President Kennedy in 1961 about JIOA.

That briefing, they say, included claims from Kammler’s team about “Vril” craft and SS beliefs linked to the Vril Society.

They say Kennedy shut JIOA down in 1962 and the program passed to defense contractors and the Air Force.

The National Archives confirms that JIOA was disbanded in 1962 and its functions moved into the Pentagon’s Office of the Director for Defense Research and Engineering.

This is what the sources mean by a “legacy program”: not one office surviving for eight decades, but work moving through military, intelligence, atomic and private organizations.

In their account, Kammler supplied personnel, sites, records and a model of compartmentalisation.

What The Sources Mean By “Non-Human”

Before returning to Roswell, one distinction in that chronology matters.

When these sources say “non-human”, they do not simply mean “extraterrestrial”.

One Intelligence Community source told Liberation Times that several non-primate intelligences have lived on or near Earth for longer than recorded history.

Whistleblowers speaking to Liberation Times usually use “non-human intelligence” or “advanced intelligences of unknown origin”. Liberation Times has also reported claims about rival non-human factions.

Congress has used similar language. UAP Disclosure Act language introduced by Senators Chuck Schumer and Mike Rounds, and sponsored by then-Senator Marco Rubio - now Secretary of State - referred to “unidentified anomalous phenomena, technologies of unknown origin, and non-human intelligence.”

The distinction also matters when reading official statements. At a November 2024 AARO roundtable, Director Jon Kosloski said the office had found no verifiable evidence of “extraterrestrial beings, activity or technology.”

In a June 2025 exchange published by Liberation Times, Kyle Warfel asked Pentagon spokesperson Susan Gough if that statement could be broadened to non-human or unknown intelligence. She replied: “No, you may not amend my statement.”

AARO’s FY2025 annual report used broader language, saying there is no evidence that government or private organizations captured or exploited material derived from UAP.

The sources argue that a craft already known inside a classified program would no longer be “unidentified”.

The same Intelligence Community source described “strangers”: aggressive, reptile-like beings said to be based on the Moon and in competition with the more empathetic “Nordic” group.

The source did not describe a conventional war;

“Competition between the sides may be nearly as old as humanity itself. What I've heard described isn't an outright war, but rather a scaled-down adversarial relationship. It's unclear which sides have aligned with international governments, or which sides are cooperating with factions within the program. It's quite possible that every government has had to manage this competition among the sides.”

That is the framework behind the sources’ use of “non-human”.

It also matters to how they interpret the next event in the chronology: Roswell.

Roswell As An Echo

When the chronology reaches July 1947, the sources do not treat Roswell as the beginning. They say the underlying program was already more than a decade old.

They say pilot Kenneth Arnold’s June 1947 sighting involved swept-wing craft, not discs. Roswell followed weeks later in New Mexico.

In their account, both were outward signs of the earlier Italian and German work.

More specifically, they say the Roswell incident involved two human-made machines derived from the older program: a Nazi design moved through Spain to Argentina, and a Wright Field prototype built by an Italian-American-German team using help from the Magenta vehicle. Liberation Times previously reported this allegation.

Several people with relevant backgrounds could not confirm that reconstruction. Some rejected it. It remains one of the chronology’s least secure claims.

A separate story circulated among German rocket-scientist families in Huntsville.

In Peter Santenello’s 2024 film on Paperclip, a retired Army officer identified only as “Theo” said he was the grandson of engineer Theodor Vowe.

He recalled a family story that Wernher von Braun was “immediately secreted away” to Roswell after the incident.

The Kammler Connection

Let’s return finally to the man at its center.

Kammler did not need a flying saucer to make himself valuable.

By 1945, he knew where some of the Reich’s most sensitive weapons, engineers, factories and records were hidden.

The question is whether he took that map to the grave - or into American custody.

The sources speaking to Liberation Times say there was more inside that network: an Ahnenerbe-linked exploitation effort, Magenta technology and a system of compartmentalisation that later crossed into the United States.

That larger story remains unverified.

But Kammler’s fate is not a footnote to it. It is the hinge. If he survived, the man who knew where Nazi Germany hid some of its most sensitive work may have carried that knowledge into the American system that emerged after the war.

Notes:

If this account is accurate, it would point towards a very different origin story for at least part of the modern UFO mystery.

But that does not mean every element of the story should be accepted at face value. Intelligence narratives can serve many purposes, and the possibilities range from a substantially true account, to a mixture of genuine information and later embellishment, to a counter-intelligence story designed to obscure something else entirely.

Liberation Times has taken the decision to report these claims because the sources involved are known to us and have demonstrated a credible track record in relation to information previously provided.

That history does not, by itself, verify every detail of what they now allege, but it is an important part of the editorial judgement behind publishing their account. That uncertainty should not be read as a reason to dismiss the sources behind this investigation. Rather, it reflects the difficulty of reconstructing events deliberately hidden for decades, where testimony, intelligence activity and fragmentary documentation overlap.

What remains striking is that each version of the story leads back to the same figure: Hans Kammler. Even leaving the alleged non-human technology aside, the possibility that one of the most powerful SS officials involved in the machinery of the Holocaust survived the collapse of Nazi Germany and passed into American custody would itself represent an extraordinary historical scandal.

Establishing what happened to Kammler - and what the United States believed he knew - may ultimately prove more consequential than any single claim surrounding the technology attributed to him.
